The honeyed optimism that attends any new season, especially one this important for rugby league, will doubtless be in full flow at today's official launch at an appropriate venue for expansive horizons. Altitude 360°, which plays host to prestige events and meetings with its views across the London skyline, is no place for faint hearts in a sport that is bucking the trend for contraction by looking to grow in 2009.
Celtic Crusaders will take the engage Super League to Wales, four years after the Bridgend club played their first game, as the competition expands to 14 clubs. Eight teams will take part in the play-offs rather than six and the start of a new television deal means an extra £300,000 per club. All cause for good cheer, although a wise dose of realism to accompany the back-slapping at Millbank Tower this lunchtime comes from a significant source.
